I've discovered hdparm.  Haven't run it on my system that is yielding
Had:timeout waiting for DMA
Ide_dmaproc:chipset supported ide_dma_timeout function only:14

I'm still going through up2date with these errors showing up
sporadically.

Does this error indicate I should disable "using dma flag"?
Or, does it indicate something about the read ahead cache? 
 I'm pretty new to actually setting params for a hard drive.

I suppose I could experiment, but as long as its taking up2date to
finish with these errors,  I thought someone here could clue me in
sooner ;-).
