After searching THE *ENTIRE* INTERNET for two solid days, I have fixed the problem of having RH 8.0 load the USB driver. I had to add only *one* line in /etc/modules.conf (any removed all lines about the scanner) alias usb-controller usb-uhci I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS FIXED IT... NO FREAKING CLUE. But, after this was added, my Epson 1650 USB scanner automagically worked.
