I had similar problems some time ago. Such an error message means that the SSH session terminated when rsync expected it to exist and tried to send data through SSH. Most probably the problem with rsync is the same as with the occasionally dropped ssh connections to 7.3 machine. I recommend you to upgrade SSH (note that the problem could be with the SSH on any of two machines).
