You don't run the X server, you run the X clients. You need to have a *local* X server on your Windows box (e.g. MiX, Exceed, Reflections, or even XFree86 under Cygwin) to run X clients. If you have a local X server, just type xterm (or whatever) in your SSH terminal, and the remote X client will will connect to your local X server, provided that you've enabled X Forwarding in Putty. If none of what I've said makes any sense to you at all, use VNC instead. In some cases (e.g. running VMware on a remote box) tightvnc with "-quality 4 -compresslevel 6" on an uncompressed ssh tunnel is much faster than X, no matter how much compression you use on your tunnel.
