Translation: I've tried every f'n font I can think of, and can't open
any of them. 

Probably the font(s) are there and fine. Most likely causes are a
nearly full filesystem or permissions on /tmp are wrong. Either will
cause xfs to fail, and no fonts are then available to the system, even
'fixed'.
