Well, I wondered that too since cdrecord is pretty agnostic about the data - it doesn't _have_ to be an iso9660. Then thought: with mkisofs you pretty much know the ISO image is good, barring the disc filling. But with cdrecord you may well want to check some third party ISO image before making a coaster from it (think corrupt downloaded ISOs etc).
