sounds like either you set your hostname or your hostname is getting
dynamically assigned by dhcp from your cable provider and when gnome
tries to look it up it can't.  Add an entry into /etc/hosts for your
ipaddress/hostname combination.  

Also make sure you don't remove the localhost.localdomain entry.

I have never dug into why gnome tries to connect to anything other than
localhost but apparently it does in certain situations.  I assume that
is is trying to find the corba orb but in every situation I have seen it
the orb is running on the local machine.  Is there ever a case with
gmone that this is not the case?
