Gustav,

I had a similar issue happen when I upgraded my home workstation from
7.2 to 7.3. My issue ended up being related to the fact that I had
altered my X11 configuration to use the Nvidia drivers for 3D
acceleration. When I ran the upgrade, the machine didn't have the right
kernel module for the Nvidia drivers...

If you had updated your X11 drivers to something that required a kernel
module, you should locate the version of that kernel module for the
kernel currently running on your machine. Once you install that, you
might also need to update any other video related drivers/modules and X11
should start back up.

If that isn't the case, then you should look at manually reconfiguring
your X11 file. It might have somehow become garbled or it doesn't know
where some files might have been moved to or replaced if their has been
some X11 updates between 7.3 and 8.0.

Subject: Upgrade RH7.3 -> 8.0 broke X

OK, so I blew it. :-(

Now it's a question of recovering what can be recovered. ;-)

Background:
I have a PC where I used to run RH7.3 with all updates applied. It was
first installed with RH6.0 (long time ago) then upgraded to 6.2, 7.0,
7.2 and 7.3.

A few days ago I upgraded to RH8.0. The upgrade went fine, i.e. I had no
errors indicated during the update. Furthermore, I have not been able to
see any related info in /root/upgrade.log after the upgrade.

Nevertheless, after the upgrade X failed to start. Error message:

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

I can provide the full /var/log/XFree86.0.log on request.

So, I started to look for 'xconfigurator', couldn't find it, learnt
somewhere that I should use 'redhat-config-xfree86' instead.

Now, my real problem is that even 'redhat-config-xfree86' fails. It
takes about 5 minutes before it returns to the promt. After that, the PC
is *extremely* slow. I can't do a 'top' or anything else. A 'beep' on
the loudspeaker goes on for more than 10 seconds. Etc.

The only thing to do is to restart. The 'shutdown' sequence takes about
5 to 8 minutes.

My monitor is a SHARP LCD LL-T1510A, which is 'not supported' but has
worked fine with all the 7.x installations after configuration with
'xconfigurator'.

I have also tried an old Microscan 4G/ADI, again 'not supported', but
hey, I just want it to get going in std VGA mode and I'll take it
manually from there.

Questions:

 - Is it correct to use 'redhat-config-xfree86' to try to reconfigure X?

 - Is there some kind of official policy that 'not supported' nowadays
means 'Can't be used'?

 - Any other tips on what I can do to get going in at least VGA mode?

Any tips, pointers and/or RTFM's highly appreciated. And tell me what
more information I can provide to help you help me. ;-)

Regards
Gustav
