Is this a USB or ethernet connected cable modem? If ethernet connected, just change your network settings, on your linux system, to dhcp and then "service network restart"...this will then set your system to try to obtain an address from the cable company. If you're using ethernet, you don't have to configure anything on your Linux system, regarding the cable modem, itself.
