I think you've got mounting confused with creating partitions? You can mount many volumes, no matter their type (primary or extended logical). You can create only 4 primary partitions, and if you need more partitions, you can opt for that 4th primary to be an extended and create numerous logical partitions within that extended partition (IIRC 63 or something odd).
I'm not aware of any restrictions on the number of NTFS file systems that you can mount at once, but I know that you're allowed to mount up to four primary partitions at once before you have to start using logical partitions inside an extended partition (something I found out the long, hard way).
