Try upgrading to the latest kernel and see if that helps then repost in
three days I guess.  I had real problems on a uniprocessor box that had
a penchant for kswapd chewing up 99% of the cpu.  I believe most of
these issues are fixed now with the revent kernels.

I do not know if that is the problem but using the latest is usually a
good practice if you are having funky problems

This 2.4.18-3smp bug was errata'ed 2.5 months ago...
