That assumes that linux is the gateway doesn't it?  As I understand it
the win98 box is the one connected to the interenet and I have no idea
if win98 has the capability to forward and nat an internal lan.

Seems like there was a wingate package at one time that did that.  I
bought an old pentium computer on ebay for $75 us and used that as a
dialup gateway before I got dsl.
