No response... That doesn't sound good.

/dev/cdrom is typically just a symlink to the actual device (in your case
/dev/hdd).

Kudzu (I think) may have deleted the link if it couldn't find your CD-ROM.
I know this happens to me sometimes if I boot with my external SCSI CD-ROM
turned off (the link to where it was disapears).

Try something like 'mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom' (make /mnt/cdrom as
necessary)

My guess is a hardware failure.  Do you have another system to test this
on?
