You need to know whether you are using PPPOE.  Most DSL providers use it
these days, but there are two ways of doing it:  1)  The DSL modem does
it for you.  In this case, just set your NIC up to get its IP address
DNS, etc via DHCP.  2)  You have to do the PPPOE on the PC.  In this
case, you need to have rp-pppoe installed and then you would set it up
much as you outlined above (or you can use the command line tool
adsl-setup).  In this case, you must not set a static IP address unless
one has been provided to you by your ISP.  192.168.0.100 will certainly
not work in this case.

In either case, it's best to not set a static IP address (except as
noted in [2]) as either the modem will give you one (usually 10.0.0.x or
192.168.0.x) or your ISP will.  If the modem assigns you one, you can
statically assign a different one if you like, but it must be in the
same subnet as the modem itself (i.e. if the modem is using 10.0.0.1 for
itself and you use 192.168.0.100 for your PC, it won't work).
