For the record, I get the exact same behavior. I didn't used to. It just
started all of a sudden. I never bothered with worrying about it because
I don't use gnome, I only test it then move on. Ditto for KDE.

As an attempted quick fix, I renamed everything in $HOME that had even
the slightest chance of having an effect (.gnome, .gnome-desktop,
.gnome2, etc) and nothing changed. So changing icons or sizes could just
be a coincidence.

I have all sorts of tarballs and  Rawhide libraries and binaries all
over this machine. I passed it off as being related to that. Maybe that
isn't the cause after all.
