Thanks to everyone who's offered an opinion on SCSI adapters the last few days... It seems I may be upgrading my adapter sooner than expected. I just purchased a 9 GB ultra narrow drive, and have realized that my Adaptec 2940U doesn't like drives over 8 GB. I'm trying to figure out what the best solution is. I'm going to call Adaptec tomorrow and see if this is something resolved in the latest BIOS firmware. Hopefully I can just upgrade this. If not, I'm looking at the BusLogic Flashpoint LW (BT-950) and the MultiMaster 958. The 958 seems to be a better card that the Flashpoint, since it has an on-board processor instead of utilizing the CPU, and seems to be a little more standard. But it's also an older card, and appears to have less-up-to date features (such as SCAM level 2, and some SCSI-3 features) than the Flashpoint. Also, all of the descriptions I can find of the 958 say it supports drives "greater than 8 GB," but never specify exactly what the maximum capacity is. How is the Flashpoint support in Linux, anyway? I see it's supported, but I've only heard about the 958. The other concern I have is if I can even put a DOS partition on a 9 GB drive. From what I can tell, if I were running an all-Linux system I'd be better off disabling Extended drive translation. But I'd like to keep a DOS partition around for all my games. I'm unclear as to whether the DOS 8 GB limitation means that DOS can't access anything beyond the first 8 GB of the drive, or that it can't access a drive greater than 8 GB, period. I assume I will need to leave Extended translation enabled for the drive. What about with FAT-32 instead of FAT-16? Also.. if I change my adapter I'm aware that the new adapter may be unable to use the old translation scheme already on my old drives. Although Buslogic adapters seems to be able to utilize several translation schemes. Has anyone here switched from an Adaptec adapter to a Buslogic adapter, and what were the results? Can anyone shed some light on these issues? Thanks in advance. -- ---------------------------------------------------------- Larry Lade - http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/6686 PGP Public Key: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/6686/pubkey.txt Fight junk e-mail!
