Can you telnet to 3306 and get a prompt? If so it has nothing to do with a firewall. If you can it may be that the client has to be identified by the server which would require either dns resolution or a listing in the hosts file. It has nothing to do with the client being able to find the server, just the server's ability to identify the calling client (I suspect).

Plus I am setting dbtools to go directly to the ip address of the mysql server.
