does /var/log/messages or dmesg report any harddrive seek or read/write
errors?

Nope. I usually find out about the errors whenever the web application reports a file being inaccessible, and/or corrupted. When I look at the physical file, I find out that it's attributes have been changed somehow (lsattr/chattr), or it got crosslinked with a different file elsewhere on the drive. Basically, this is where I'll unmount the partition and run fsck on it - which then reports all the other errors it finds. I fix them all, remount the drive and off I go. A few days later the process gets repeated with a different file, elsewhere on the drive.

This is only happening on one (out of 3) drive in the machine. The rest are all running fine.
