Small correction:

up2date -u will download and install everything available *that is not on 
the package skip-list*

Under the default /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date configuration file the kernel 
packages will still be skipped when issuing an  up2date -u

The method for updating a package on the skip-list is either to use the -f 
flag with the package name or modify the skip-list in 
/etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date
