Keyboard dead key problem

Hello,

I have a question about dead keys. I'm using Redhat 7.3, and I had it installed once with the type "U.S. English w/deadkeys", checked the "enable deadkeys" box, and it used to work. Up until recently that is... SOMEHOW my system switched to normal behaviour, and dead keys no longer work. I need these though, so if someone could help me out here, I'd be very grateful! What do I need to do to get my beloved dead keys back?
