Hi all,

I'm currently trying to set up one of my Linux PCs (RHL 7.3) as a NIS
client to my OpenBSD 3.2 NIS(YP) server. I have the server running and
I have ypbind running on the Linux box, so 'ypcat passwd' and
'ypcat group' work. For debugging, I have a more general question,
though: Is yppasswd supposed to work even if I haven't changed
/etc/passwd for NIS use yet? Or do I have to set up the client fully
before these things work?
If possible, I'd like to test partial aspect first before changing
everything. I've read through the Linux NIS-HOWTO and the various man
pages, but that point stayed unclear to me.
Right now, yppasswd doesn't work (i.e. I'm not able to change my YP
password using yppasswd), but I'd like to know whether that's due to
some problem on the server or due to the fact that it simply doesn't
work without the changes to /etc/passwd...

Cheerio,

Thomas
