Mysql problems

Ok, I have a redhat 8.0 install, well actually 2 of them
and mysql works fine as long as I'm connecting over Unix sockets,
but if I try to connect to the server remotely (yes the permissions are right!)
I get a "Error 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query".
it crashes mysql with a segmentation fault, as shown a few times below.
Ideas? is this a MySQL problem? or a RedHat issue?
