Firstly, you haven't downloaded Linux 8.0 from my website, you've downloaded RedHat Linux v8.0 from a RedHat website or one of it's mirrors. This mailing list is NOT moderated by RedHat. It was set up by RedHat to allow their operating system users a chance to talk over problems they are having. RedHat do NOT provide support if you downloaded their operating system, only if you buy the box set and give them money (which is fair enough, ofcourse). Please keep this in mind, the people on this list are or are not voluntarily going to help you. > > Processor: Intel P4 1.2GHz > motherboard: Mercury board with Intel 845G chipset > Memory: 128MB > HDD: 40GB - Samsung > CD Rom Drive: 52x Samsung > > I have tried installing Linux 8 on this machine. The installation goes smoothly, but when starting the operating system, the GUI interface does not come up (even when I have selected the proper option during installation). If I try to start the GUI after logging into root, the system gives some error and aborts, and am left at the CLI. This is going from memory, but I believe your problems are correct. I know the D845G chipset was not supported for a long time. I've heard some snippets of information since then saying it IS in the latest XFree86, which you would have to download and install. Please check with the XFree86 site and see whether the chipset is even supported. > > Also, my monitor is by HP. kindly tell me as to which monitor type has to be selected in the monitor list that pops up during setup. > Again, this is not for us to tell you. If your model is not listed, then you will have to go to the manual, and find the refresh rates/resolutions etc. your monitor provides, then set it up manually. Searching google always helps.
