Michael, Again, thanks for your help! I'll be reinstalling packages later this afternoon and hopefully I can get the system back up and get some development going on it.
I'm pretty certain the system hasn't been compromised. I'm the only one locally with root access and any unix/linux skills. I'd also applied all errata and updates before the system was given internet access. Firewall was set high and what few services I needed turned back on. The system had only been on the internet about 4 hours. Corruption problems appeared after I installed the newest version of gcc from the rpms on the 7.3 gcc channel. I'll post what happens.
