Dear Friends (I hope):

This is my third attempt at posting a request to this list. I hope that this one makes it through. I am apparently wasting a lot of effort to no avail.

I don't know why, but I've been dreading this task and avoiding it like the plague. I guess I don't want to admit how ignorant I am and ask for
help or am afraid I won't find any, but I am stumped. What is most perplexing is that I've installed Mandrake 9.0 on this system with only minor problems. Now going to RH 8.0 is a monumental task.

I'm running a Sony PCG-GRX570 laptop here. You should be able to glean more than I know about my hardware from the files I've attached to this email. The sparse documentation that came with the the laptop revealed that I have a Yamaha AC '97 sound card (more on that below), a Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics card, IEEE 1394 firewire port, 3 USB ports, ACPI, a
Sony cd-rw crx810e cdrw drive and ULTRA ATA IDE controller, etc.

First of all, my system won't boot unless I go interactive and bypass
network startup and pcmcia startup. If I bypass both of these
the system boots and runs fairly well except that I can't get online through my ethernet connection at school. I've never had linux detect the modem on this thing and haven't thoroughly investigated that problem yet. Finally, my sound is broken with messages like "can't open /dev/dsp no such device, and it hangs on shutdown while saving mixer settings.

I am running a custom kernel based upon the "kernel-2.4.18-i686.config". I have installed all the updates that I downloaded from the mirror,
csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu, since we have a T1 connect with them. The
names of the updates are included in the file 'updates' that is attached. I've also attached several log files and configuration files whose names are self-explanatory.

NETWORK PROBLEMS:

System hangs on "initializing loopback interface". If I bypass network
startup and run 'ifup ifcfg-lo', I get the same result, i.e., nothing--it just hangs. If I run '/etc/init.d/network status', I get

Configured devices:
lo eth0
Currently active devices:
lo

I am configured for dhcp at boot, but that shouldn't hang my system forever. I tried changing that and it still hangs at loopback ini. I have never encountered this problem before.

As you can see from my dmesg, I'm getting an 'oops' at boot. I'm not
sure how to interpret that or what to do. I usually get several "No IRQ known for pin ... please try using pci=biosirq" messages. This latest boot I passed pci=biosirq, but the unknown interrupt messages persist without the kernel parameter suggestion.

SOUND PROBLEMS:

I have a Yamaha AC-XG sound card using irq 9 in windows. Linux always
detects it as an Intel AC '97 and, in fact, my laptop documentation identifies it as a Yamaha AC '97. I've never had my cdrom play audio cd's. Other sound events have worked with arts, and I've had ogle playing dvd's with sound in Mandrake. I
don't recall ever getting the message "/dev/dsp: no such device" before.

ls -la /dev/dsp

/dev/dsp gives crw------- 1 mooreg0 root 14, 3 Aug 30 18:31
/dev/dsp

so, as you can see, not only is the device created but I own it as user
mooreg0. If I 'cat someWavFile.wav > /dev/dsp' I get the same error
message:

[mooreg0@sista sysIssues]$ cat
/usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98/sound/test.wav>/dev/dsp
bash: /dev/dsp: No such device

If anyone can help me find out how to fix this box before the next semester of school starts I will be extremely grateful. I have to reboot into Windows to get online right now and send this email. This is very painful for me, so please help. I will provide more information as needed.

Glen
