entirely depends on how you log into it. if your logging into
the console, or from remote(e.g. ssh) I would look at the manpage
for bash which is the default shell, files such as ~/.bash_profile,
~/.bash_login, and ~/.profile ..

if your logging into X, this would usually be called by the window manager.
I use afterstep which loads commands specified in
~/GNUStep/Library/AfterStep/autoexec ..Gnome, KDE are different. GNOME 1.4
at least has a control center which makes it easy to start programs upon
login. Not sure about gnome 2(never used it), and not sure about KDE.

if your logging into a terminal but are not using bash, e.g. using tcsh,
csh, ksh or something then see the manpage for that shell to find the
files it reads when you login.
