I will only buy BusLogic/Mylex. Aside from the great quality of their
cards (where I work we use them extensively and have *zero* problems),
they are very committed to the Linux community. I met some of the Mylex
guys at COMDEX last November. Great bunch of guys. Very concerned about
taking care of their Linux users. Nice to see a hardware manufacturer
that cares about OSes other than Win95/WinNT/NetWare. Try getting any
support (or specs) out of Adaptec.
You know, a good deal of Linux users make a point of not buying Microsoft
products because of the unethical things that Microsoft does. Most of us
also go and buy a CD from a distribution vendor like Red Hat for about
$40. Why do we do this when we could get a cheap CD from LSL for $1.98?
Because we care about Linux and we know that supporting Red Hat means that
they can keep on making a great distribution.
I think that people should do the same with hardware purchases. Let your
dollars be your votes. Don't buy products from vendors that don't respect
you, manufacturers like Adaptec. Companies like Mylex and 3Dfx care about
Linux users. We want to encourage this behaviour. Buslogic BT-958
Ultra-Wide controllers cost just about as much as an Adaptec 2940UW. You
may have to look a little harder to find them, but trust me, it'll be well
worth the effort.
Do your part in advancing the Linux cause. Boycott Adaptec.
