A day or two ago, a message came up on the list (no time to look it up
just now) from a guy who was starting a business in Florida selling
loaded Linux machines for around $800. Mercenary that I am, I dutifully
forwarded it to my boss.

A little background: Our company does data consulting for the health
care industry, specifically pharmacies and the companies who sell them
management systems. Many of those vendors' applications run on SCO,
which
starts at a ballpark $1400 per machine and doesn't come close to Linux
(but then what does?). Since we often
need to simulate our clients' systems in our lab, we've been playing
with porting some vendors' applications
to Linux, and so far the success rate has been quite promising. I've
talked to a couple of our vendors, and they've often never heard that
anything like Linux exists, and they respond to my endorsements with
open-mouthed astonishment.

Anyhow, right now my boss is faxing the original announcement of the
$800 systems to executives from about a half dozen of those vendors who
currently use SCO. What a great boss I do have. I'll report back if we
get any nibbles.
