I've recently installed RH5 and I'm in the proccess of configuring the
various hardware components that I have in my current machine.... I visited
the RH updates directory on the RH ftp site and d/l all the latest RPMS.
When I actually had a look at them I realised that the latest kernel source
provided by RH was 2.0.32.. I was a bit unhappy about this as I would have
liked to be using the most upto date version of the kernel.. I was just
about to d/l and install one of the tar.gz kernel sources from another ftp
site when I noticed a strange reference within the INSTALL.awe file in the
awe driver update package.. it says that if your installing the patch on a
Redhat kernel based system u need to apply a different instalation patch
than if u were installing it on a standard kernel :\
So.. 2 questions really..
1: Can I use a standard kernel on my RH5 box? (if not, why ain't there a
2.0.33.rpm yet?) If so, is there anything special that I need to do to
install it or can I use the normal methods? (does initscripts need to be
changed in anyway?)
2: What is this difference that means that patches need a seperate install
script for RH? I guess its something I should be aware of as simmilar
problems may occur with other applications that don't recognise this
difference)
Sorry if that all sounds a bit rushed.. its cos I'm a bit busy but I really
want to get an answer to that question by the end of today so I can
configure RH..
Errrrr... one last thing.. Its about the updates... wouldn't it be a bit
more "newbie" friendly if you had a page somewhere saying exactly which RH
updates NEED to be installed and which are optional... It would be a good
way of keeping some kinda standard anyhow, as apposed to ppl just installing
which ever patches sound sort of neccecery...
Err.. think thats the lot.. if not.. expect another post in about 5mins :)
Thanks in advance :)
