This is probably because Applix cannot allocate the colours it needs. I
experienced this when I ran 8 bits per pixel and had other
colour-intensive applications open, such as Netscape. Exit any
applications you have running before starting Applix if you're running
with 8bpp, or better yet, switch to 16bpp. I haven't had any similar
problems since doing that.
