I had this problem too when I had sound support compiled
as a module (actually, I recall that there was a warning somewhere in
the documentation that sound.o should be loaded "as early as possible"
because of DMA allocation problems. Compiling the module took a good
part of the day, sorting out all missing config options, and it did
not work well anyway. That's in 2.0.33). I compiled sound support into
the kernel, now it works fine... almost, MPU doesn't get initialized
still.
It seems SB owners benefitted a bit from RH5.0 sound setup,
cannot say that about myself (AOpen AW32, CS4232 based... go find
anything better here in Mexico.)
Best wishes,
Oleg
