Either there is something wrong with your gs, or you are doing something
wrong.  Ghostscript reads pdf files just fine.

My ghostscript output:

# gs -h

Language interpreters:
        PostScript PostScriptLevel1 PostScriptLevel2 PDF


Your not expecting it to read gif/jpg/targa/bmp files, are you?
What is 'file preference type'?

Try the graphical version, ghostview, or `gv', which is probably a better
previewer.
