but you need to be careful, not all tar programs are created equal. One
area in which I've found them to be unequal is what do they do when 
a file gets split across volumes.... While I've not specifically compared
an old xenix tar to GNU tar in that respect, I wouldn't be surprised if
they are not fully compatible.
