I haven't compiled ghostscript, but the errors you're having sound
suspiciously like problems lots of people have had when compiling
"older" (pre-December) packages under the new glibc libraries. 
(Specifically, I was able to compile the TIS firewall kit smoothly until
I upgraded to 5.0, when I started getting lots of parse errors similar
to what you're describing.)  So I can't make any specific suggestions
but I'd look in that direction.

If you have the time and resources, one imperfect solution might be to
try the compile on a machine that's set up with the RH4.2 libraries and
see if that makes a significant difference.
