Usually the need for a national ISP is for one that travels, or at
least moves a couple times per year. As a college student, I am at college
part of the year in Longview, TX, and part of the year at home in Boulder,
CO. To keep two accounts with local ISPs would be a pain and not very cost
effective, esp. since ISP have no concept of the idea of "freezing" the
account for a few months. With a national ISP, I can use that same
account in both places with only a change of the phone number in my
connection script. At least that is my reason...
I use AT&T Worldnet, and I have been rather happy with thier
service. It is not perfect, but still quite good. Some one posted the
details on connection, so I won't. Also, I have heard good things about
mci's ISP service, and there is a web page on the net (search for it) that
explains connecting w/Linux. Also, both of them provide flat rate serve
for ~$20 a month. Ibm.net does not offer such service (flat rate).
My two cents, hope it helps.
