I just bought a new Zoom 56Kx external modem and have found it very
satisfactory. It connects well with a number of other modems
and works with Hylafax as a Class 2 fax modem.
This is Model 2949, a "dual-mode" model that claims to implement both
the new V.90 ITU Standard and the K56flex mode. Seems to, as far as
I can tell. It was offered for $110. at Office Depot in Savannah and
Zoom is offering a $20. rebate for purchases thru May 30, 1998.
The user documentation is pretty thin, but http://www.rss.rockwell.com
has much more complete info for this modem in Adobe Acrobat format
(1048R4.PDF) and others.
I had been thinking about ISDN, but for a one time $90. cost I've
achieved most of the gain.
