I'm running RedHat 4.2 (kernel doesn't affect the problem) XFree86 3.3
with xdm and fvwm2 (not fvwm95). The graphical login screen has a
window open labeled "Console log for <machine>". When I log in, this
window (now decorated) appears on my screen, but I never see any
console messages on it. I never see console messages on any of my
other virtual consoles (1 through 6) either. However, I can look at
the console log using dmesg and messages appear there.

Recently, my Xserver died and xdm failed to restart it for some
reason. It turns out that the console messages are appearing as text
on virtual console 7!

This has been going on ever since I started using xdm. There's
nothing in any fvwmrc that I can see that's relevant. In
/etc/X11/xdm, there are the following references, none of which have
been changed from the original installation:

  GiveConsole: chown $USER /dev/console

  TakeConsole: chmod 622 /dev/console
  TakeConsole: chown root /dev/console

  Xresources: XConsole.text.geometry: 480x130
  Xresources: XConsole.verbose: true
  Xresources: XConsole*iconic: true
  Xresources: XConsole*font: fixed

  Xsetup_0: /usr/X11R6/bin/xconsole -geometry 480x130-0-0 -daemon -notify
        -verbose -fn fixed -exitOnFail

  xdm-config: DisplayManager._0.startup: /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole
  xdm-config: DisplayManager._0.reset: /etc/X11/xdm/TakeConsole

When I'm logged in, my console is listed as:

  crw--w--w- 2 mjs root 4, 0 Mar 1 19:02 /dev/console

Xdm is started using the RedHat Runlevel-5 method. The relevant
entries in /etc/inittab are:

  id:5:initdefault:
  x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/X11/xdm -nodaemon

Does anyone recognize a problem with this configuration that would
cause the problem behavior?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
