I haven't had any problems with my external SCSI Jaz either. In fact, all the installations I have done have come directly off of a Jaz cartridge. I then manually remount the drive later if I need to add packages or what not. Haven't had this problem with my (internal) Jaz drive here; the only problems I've had are with dodgy cartridges.
