What exactly is the ' used for in the bash shell?  Whenever it gets typed
at a bash prompt, I get:

>

For example:

bash# any_command '
>

In csh and tcsh, I get it as being unmatched.

In zsh, I get:

quote>

It looks like each shell treats it a little differently.

Any ideas as to what it's used for?

 Linux is user friendly.  It's just selective about who its friends are.
