I've installed Red Hat 5.0 on a Compaq Presario 4706. It worked fine until I installed a Linksys EtherPCI LAN Card II. With the card installed, the system fails to come up at all. Normally when you power it on the word "Compaq" comes up on the screen, then it goes through its boot process, etc. Now the system reads the hard drive for a brief instant, then nothing... No "Compaq," nothing -- just blank screen and no disk activity. It's not the card -- I took a working card (same model) out of a Windows system and swapped them. The Windows system worked with the card I had been testing, and the Linux system failed again in the same fashion. (Although it's obviously not Linux's fault -- the computer never loads the OS). Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so, how did you solve it? I've tried all sorts of stuff -- I remove the card, boot into DOS with a floppy and run Compaq's SETUP and diagnostics program, disable PCI bus mastering, enable it, etc., etc. I've reset CMOS, turned off power mgmt., etc. The system runs fine if I take the Ethernet card out.
