try this,  make sure its built as a kernel module,  , boot up the machine
normally, and then shut off the network. (/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop.
on redhat 5.x machines), then "rmmod tulip", wait about 10 seconds, and
then "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start", check to see if you can ping out. (
wait about 30 seconds  (the driver will switch from 10Mb to 100Mb to try
and find an active port, and takes a little time..)  I have a pair of
DE500's that require this probe, rmmod and re-probe sequence to behave
properly.
