Hi,
It's good that the probe finds the correct chip; it's OK that it reports
PCI--remember that the chipset on your mainboard controls the PCI bus as
well as the AGP bus, among other things--I believe that the AGP bus is
somehow connected to the PCI bus at some level... There's a pretty good
explanation of all this stuff at a place called
www.hardwarecentral.com
If your Xconfigurator gives you the opportunity, manually set the amount
of RAM on the card (as opposed to "auto" or "probed"). The RAMDAC should
work if set to "probed" (at least it does with my GX2 chip), unless you
know the exact specification, and it appears as a choice on the list,
then use it.
I've had the same display experience you're talking about before (mostly
on NT) when trying to figure out the optimum settings for a card/monitor
combination. It usually happens when the refresh rate is set too high (or
not supported by the monitor) for the screen resolution/pixel depth (how
many colors). You get a double display; it's off center, and probably
flickering like crazy.
Try using the generic multisync or some generic SVGA setting for the
monitor and start with 640x480 and 8 or 16 bit color depth, while setting
the virtual desktop resolution to same, and work your way up to higher
resolutions/colors from this basic setting. If your exact monitor is not
on the list, you'll be doing this anyway :)
At least you'll be able to eliminate the settings which your monitor won't
tolerate, and arrive at the ones which do work. Also see if the manual for
your monitor has a table of the resolution/refresh rate combos which are
supported (best starting point). You may find that your monitor has a
limited range of settings--also, what settings are successful with the
monitor under other operating systems?
Once you get something acceptable make a backup of the Xconfig file so you
can always roll back to something that works when you make further
changes.
I'm sure there are more points to be added by others on the list--good
luck!
