Runlevel 5 is "xdm" in RedHat. (never ran Slak).
You do NOT have to have the other machine in
/etc/hosts. I do due to local network/IPMasq/etc..
Exceed is an X Server for Windows. All the goodies,
expensive, etc...
Allows full screen xdm login from the Windows box or
multiple xclient windows, whatever you prefer.

Try switching to runlevel 5 and I think you'll be pleased.
