I don't know about the MetroX problems (I admit it is touchy, but once up,
it flys compared to XF86_SVGA...), but I had problems with X hanging too
on shutdown. I figured out (from xconsole) that gpm refused to shutdown
from within X. So, remove the link in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ (assuming that's
your runlevel) back to /etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm. You don't need it in X
anyway. BTW, you can always kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace, or if you're
running xdm do ps uax | grep xdm, and kill xdm.
