I have recently edited my /etc/fstab, but am not sure whether that has
anything to do with the following problem. (I don't think i changed
abything in that file for the relevant drive.)

I was resuming work in an X session which had been left idle all day. I
made a PPP connection and was starting to use my e-mail client when i was
suddenly thrown into a console. I don't remember eveerything that the
console said, but there was something about "core dump" and i was no longer
able to log in. Now when i reboot i get the following:

        [/sbin/fsck.ext -a /dev/hdb1]
/dev/hdb1 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
        /dev/hdb1: Inode 224105 has illegal block(s).
/dev/hdb1: Unexpected inconsistency: Run fsck manually.
                                (i.e., without -a or -p options)
*** An error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell, the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell
        Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup)

hdb1 is the drive on which i have Linux.

What should i do? (BTW, you're dealing with a newbie.) Thanks in advance
for any help.
