I'm afraid I still don't see quite where you're coming from.  What,
specifically and in gorey detail, is the practical difference between
what you want to do vis a vis upgrading one machine, and then upgrading
the other one?  Do you want to upgrade a machine and then clone it
file-by-file?  If so, why?

WRT the question of whether to upgrade -- I don't think you said which
version of RH you're currently using.  As of 5.0, the C libraries
underwent a major overhaul which has caused some back-compatibility
problems with some applications which worked under 4.2 and previous, and
there may be other reasons why upgrading could cause grief; on the other
hand, 5.1 does have some nice stuff tacked on/old pains fixed, and so
far I like it just fine.  What do you hope to gain from an upgrade?
