tty1 represents the first console -- you don't want to do that.  And cua1
represents com2.  Use cua0 if it is your first com port.

Try killing gpm, with "gpm -k" then doing:

# cat < /dev/cua0

and move the mouse.  You should see some garbage printed to the screen at
that point.  Use ctrl-c to stop it.  Otherwise try another port, like
/dev/cua1 or /dev/psaux, etc.

If you eventually find one that prints data, you know it is a gpm
configuration problem.  Otherwise, check /var/log/dmesg for a possible
indication of where you mouse is :)
