Well, uhm, I do use a 386 in my network, but not as a distributed
computing system. :)  I use mine for a DNS and RADIUS server, but it's too
slow to be my router (I have T1 lines). 

I would not suggest it.  The 386 is simply not at the right point on the
price/performance curve, unless you have literally hundreds of them
already.  Even then, you would probably be better off buying used 486's or
better Pentiums and running Beowulf on them, simply because of the
power/power ratio (computing power to electrical power! :) ).

My 386 likes to crash when the network is busy.  I hear the 2.1 kernel
fixes this problem with a 'computer too slow for network load' option or
something like that in the compile. :)
