Hi,

I hereby want to report a problem I have with the Red Hat Linux 4.2's
latest official kernel/pcmcia-cs update packages.

The system: a Compaq Contura 430C with a Kingston KNE-PCM/x PCMCIA
Ethernet adapter, Red Hat Linux 4.2 with all official updates (except
the kernel, kernel-modules, and pcmcia-cs packages, see below).

First, both kernel-*-2.0.30-2 (with pcmcia-cs-2.9.4-2) and
kernel-*-2.0.30-3 (with pcmcia-cs-2.9.5-3) do work more or less,
at least do not have the hang problems I'm describing here (see also
the notes at the end). With these kernels I get at startup time:

Starting PCMCIA services: modules VLSI 82C146 at 0x3e4, 1 socket
  cardmgr
  Starting INET services: inetd

When I use the kernel-*-2.0.32-1 (with pcmcia-cs-2.9.12-1) or an
own-generated (using Red Hat's kernel RPM spec file) kernel-2.0.33
and pcmcia-cs-2.9.12 combination, the system hangs forever,
appearently just after accessing the PCMCIA Ethernet device.
At startup time, I see:

  Starting PCMCIA services: modules cardmgr
  Starting INET services:

Now the system hangs forever, even CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work anymore.
This is fully reproducable.

Some additional notes:

- I'm absolutely sure that I always used the correct combination of
   kernel/kernel-modules/pcmcia-cs packages (between different kernel
selections with LILO I up/downgraded the pcmcia-cs package as
   needed).

- The system also worked fine since long with Red Hat Linux 3.0.3
   and kernel 1.2.13.

- With the 2.0.x kernels and pcmcia-cs packages that do not hang
the system, I frequently (every 20 minutes or so) can't use the
network adapter and get the following kernel messages:

Mar 10 11:50:07 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 1 vs 5d.
Mar 10 11:50:07 dumbo kernel: eth0: unexpected TX-done interrupt, lasttx=20.
Mar 10 11:50:51 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 1 vs 0.
Mar 10 11:51:01 dumbo last message repeated 5 times
Mar 10 11:51:06 dumbo kernel: eth0: pcnet_reset_8390() did not complete.
Mar 10 11:51:11 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 1 vs 4c.
Mar 10 11:52:11 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 4c vs 0.
Mar 10 11:52:11 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 4c vs 4d.
Mar 10 11:52:11 dumbo last message repeated 5 times
Mar 10 11:52:11 dumbo kernel: eth0: pcnet_reset_8390() did not complete.
Mar 10 11:53:01 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 4c vs 4d.
Mar 10 11:53:03 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 0 vs 57.
Mar 10 11:53:03 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 4c vs ff.
Mar 10 11:53:03 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 0 vs 57.
Mar 10 11:53:03 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 4c vs ff.
Mar 10 11:53:03 dumbo kernel: eth0: unexpected TX-done interrupt, lasttx=1.
Mar 10 11:53:05 dumbo kernel: eth0: mismatched read page pointers 4c vs 59.

This can be solved temporarily by removing/inserting the PCMCIA
   card again.

- For serveral reasons, I am not able to test Red Hat Linux 5.0 on
that system the next weeks, so unfortunately I can't test whether
this problem has been solved in 5.0. Note however that the
kernel and PCMCIA versions of 5.0 are the same as the ones
failing with 4.2 (except for the release number).

Thanks for any help,
