I don't do anything re options when printing from the file menu.
I just tried doing your ps-while-acroread_printing suggestion
and I see _no_ evidence of ghostscript.

I ran this several times after hitting print inside acroread
until printing was done, and always the same,
no ghostscript seen under 'ps'
